Alternative E (in blue) would swing significantly west of I-17 in at least one place, cutting off the "old road"
from Bumble Bee to Black Canyon City and impacting the Black Canyon Trail. Alternative E would re-join
I-17 near the top of Black Mesa. The impacted area is south of Bumble Bee but still part of the canyon that
stretches north from Black Canyon City.
While Alternative E would not be nearly as destructive as Alternative H would have been, it would still
impact habitat and recreation. Dense groves of saguaro cacti grow in this area, and many people enjoy
recreating on roads and trails the freeway would cut off.

I-17 Widening Project from New River to Cordes Junction
|
This project would widen I-17 to eight lanes between New River and Cordes Junction.
The difficult part is the section between Black Canyon City and the top of Black Mesa.
ADOT has again narrowed its options and now proposes two possible "alternative"
plans as it decides where and how to widen I-17. Each "alternative" represents one
proposal. Only one alternative will be chosen. In November 2008, ADOT eliminated
"Alternative H" from the list of possibilities.
ALTERNATIVE "D" (in green on top map) would closely follow the existing path of I-17 between Black
Canyon City and Sunset Point. It would make use of the median in the existing freeway and several
bridge-like structures to achieve four lanes in each direction.
Because of its location, Alternative "D" would have no negative impact on the Black Canyon. It would
have little to no impact on recreation, wildlife and habitat, the Agua Fria National Monument, or
recreational trails.
